Feedback Loops - Are your Email Marketing Campaigns Getting Blocked?
There’s a new way to unsubscribe, feedback loops. Most major ISPs such as Yahoo and AOL are using feedback loops so recipients of unwanted emails can hit a Spam button instead of unsubscribing. Complaint data is then sent back to the sender. Complainers are automatically unsubscribed from your list and then the data can be used to analyze and improve deliverability. Before feedback loops existed senders and email service providers weren’t aware of these complaints so emails continued to be sent, spam buttons were hit until a permanent block was placed on the IP address.
ISP’s use complaints to setup filters that stop unwanted messages. Complaint rates as low as 1 in 1,000 can trigger a block. This kept a lot of legitimate email from being delivered to recipients who were expecting information.
Ways to avoid recipients from hitting the spam button:
-Make your unsubscribe link easy to see. If you’re sending a long message and your link is at the bottom clicking a spam button is more likely to happen. Depending on what your’re sending consider moving it closer to the top of your email.
-Only send to email addresses that have agreed to receive info from you or have expressed an interest in your products or services.
-Never send to a 3rd party (purchased, rented or borrowed) list
-From address should be recognizable
-Subject line should be relevant and reflect the content
-Be consistent. Send email in regular intervals
-Do not over send. Decide how often you’re recipients would like to hear from you
