postheadericon Are You Taking Advantage of Social Media Outlets?

I’ve heard different opinions about social media.  Some say it’s a blip and it’s only for young people.  Others say it’s the marketing wave of the future.  Since social media is relatively new, there’s really no set path as to how to tackle using it for your benefit.  It’s a lot of trial and error to see what works best for you.  That’s not to say you shouldn’t try out some of the outlets… you could see some surprising results.

Create a Facebook Page

Many people think Facebook if just for young people.  Well, I don’t think I’m that young and I’ve had a page for a year now.  So does almost everyone from my sorority, my high school, my junior high, my elementary school, my old job in Los Angeles, etc…  This is how most people stay in contact now-a-days.  I hear “Did you see so-and-so’s Facebook page today?” or even “I’ll Facebook you.”  It’s everywhere and apparently it’s now being used as a verb.  Why not take advantage of this huge resource?  What do you have to lose?  I’m guessing very little compared to the lost opportunity if you never try it.

If you don’t already have a personal Facebook profile, create one.  Then set up a Facebook Page for your business.  Facebook doesn’t allow one person to have multiple accounts, but you can have a fan page for your business associated with your personal profile.  You can always assign additional “Admins” to your page so you don’t have to do all of the work.  Here at Boomerang, we all have our own personal Facebook profiles, but a few of us also have access to update and change the Boomerang Facebook page.

Invite all of your “Friends” to become a fan of your page.  Power is in numbers when it comes to social media.  There are many things you can do to your page to make it interesting for people to become a fan;  create events and invite people to attend, upload photos, have links to special offers on your website, etc… You can also include your blog feed so it shows your latest entries on your Wall.   If you’re not blogging, that’s the best place to start.  Check out my past article: Why Write a Blog? .

Create a Twitter Account

It’s very simple to create a Twitter Account.  Use your Business Logo as your image, add your URL, and enter a brief description of your company.  I have my own account with my personal picture, and we have a page for Boomerang as well with our logo.

Check out Boomerang’s Twitter Page… Follow Us while you’re there.

You want to have “Followers” on Twitter and also “Follow” people you’re interested in.  Twitter now has a search function on the home page so you can see who’s tweeting phrases you’re interested in.  Start following those that look interesting to you.  You’ll see that people will start following you as well.

Of course it helps to attract followers if you publish Tweets on your page.  You can enter anything you want really, as long as it’s within 140 characters.  Many people enter recent news with links back to your website.  That is the main point, to get people back to your website or blog.

Use shortened URLs so you can get the maximum amount of characters in your message and not your link.  Boomerang has a free service called Boomerang Hot Links for this exact purpose.  You enter your long URL, and we’ll give you back a shortened URL to use in your Tweet.

Many people use “hashtags” as well.  Because of the search function, this really does come in handy.  If you always want to pop up when someone searches “cars”, then include “#cars” in every Tweet you publish.

Because it’s hard to keep track of so many different outlets: updating your Facebook Page, Writing in your Blog, and Tweeting on Twitter…  Boomerang also has a free service called TwitterBlog that automatically Tweets your new Blog entries.  Less updating for you.  It’s automatic and free.  The more people that write on your blog, the more automatic Tweets you’ll have, the more you show up in your “Followers” screen, the more chance you have of people clicking on your links back to your website.
