You have a customer who’s been on your site and just made a purchase.  They’re in “buying mode” and you’re fresh on their mind.  Transactional e-mails such as purchase confirmations and shipping notifications offer the perfect chance to provide services and sell products at the same time. This is when you want to strike, while your customer is thinking about you.  Recipients are already engaged so they’ll anticipate, open and read transactional e-mail more than any other form of e-mail, sometimes revisiting the same e-mail multiple times increasing upsell activity.  Response rates go up significantly when content is relevant and timely.
