Sender ID
Sender ID is a type of email authentication technology used to confirm the sender of the email and block forged or fake emails. The receiving mail server looks up the domain name of the purported sender and compares it to the SPF record for that domain in the DNS. If the information doesn’t match, the Hotmail subscriber will now be alerted in a "safety bar" above the message. The alert states: "The sender of this message could not be verified by Sender ID." Depending on the filtering levels, these emails may be placed in the junk folder or even deleted.
The change today applies only to senders with published SPF records that fail the Sender ID check.
At Boomerang, we strongly support email authentication as one tool that can help reduce the amount of spam and phishing. We have already implemented Sender ID-compliant records for Boomerang-owned domain names used in sending client emails.
Here is what we recommend you do:
-
If you are using domain names we own to send your messages, e.g., responsetrack.net, [your company name]-info.com, you don’t need to do anything at this time. Our domains are already Sender ID compliant.
-
If you are using your own domain names in your emails and your company has published its SPF record, you should confirm that your SPF record is Sender ID compliant. In addition, you need to add our IP addresses to your SPF record.
- If you are using your own domain names in your emails and your company has not published its SPF record, we recommend that you do so immediately. You also need to add our IP addresses to your SPF record. For information on how to set up your SPF record, consult http://www.emailauthentication.org/resources. Microsoft also offers a wizard to facilitate SPF record publication at www.anti-spamtools.org.
